From abandoned and contaminated wastelands to must-have contemporary office spaces, the regeneration of Kings Cross has been nothing short of spectacular. At FDS, we’ve been delighted to play a role in this urban transformation.
The regeneration at Kings Cross is so fresh and exciting that the area’s even been given a brand new postcode, N1C. Planning permission to work on the 67-acre industrial site was given in 2006, and the progress has been fascinating Kings Cross rail travellers ever since. 50 new buildings, 20 refurbished buildings, and 10 new public spaces will go a long way towards restoring Kings Cross back to its Victorian glory, when it was one of the capital’s commercial heartlands.
As well as commercial premises, there’ll also be new homes in N1C – and at FDS, we’ve worked on the life safety and security systems for a whole variety of spaces.
Our first project at Kings Cross was for the BNP Paribas office building back in 2015, commissioned by GBE Fire and Security. This is a massive 371,000 sq ft office building which also has retail and catering units on the ground floor. We installed the fire alarms, disabled refuge, toilet alarms, aspirating systems and a PAVA system.
This led on to work at T1 Kings Cross, a mixed use residential and commercial building, with a distinctive red-panelled finish. We installed a complete life safety system, along with access control, CCTV and intercoms. With 2000 new homes planned, this really felt like the start of something exciting.
Next, we moved onto another commercial building, R7, impressive office premises designed to encourage collaborative working among employees. Facilities include a large roof terrace overlooking this now-vibrant area.
Our current project in Kings Cross is S2, Mossessian’s innovative mixed-use commercial building. This landmark building has ground-floor restaurants and retail units topped by nine storeys of office space, then is finished off with a rooftop terrace. It’s going to be a fantastic (and safe!) place to work.
As we work, the area around us grows increasingly vibrant and thriving. It’s great to be a part of all this energy, and to know that thanks to us, workers and residents in Kings Cross have robust and reliable life safety systems.
